Lately, there’s been a lot of buzz about a new area coming to MOGL. Sparked by the video below (thanks Nugget News!) and the ensuing pictures posted on MOGL’s twitter (@playmogltoday), I’ve decided to explore my theories about this new world.
The Great Flood:
Lethal and Michael have proclaimed several times now that “a great flood is coming!”, but what does this really mean? There are no floods in Minecraft, and without the assistance of a mod, there would be no way to simulate this in MOGL.
Perhaps this flood isn’t literal then. When we think of the phrase “great flood”, we think first of Noah’s Ark, a story in which it rains for 40 days and nights and all life is wiped out besides the animals and people on the ark. When the rains stop, Noah, his family, and the animals land on a newly-emerged island and start life anew.
This leads to a myriad of questions, but perhaps the most pressing: will we have to start over? Will we be forced into this “new world”, or will it and Springfield exist simultaneously? Michael has expressed his desire to have “multiple cities”, but if we subscribe to the idea of this “great flood” being a second Noah’s Ark, how does this fit?
At the time of this writing, there have been thirteen pictures posted on MOGL’s twitter teasing this new world. I have included them below and numbered them for reference.
Evidently, these pictures are all very different. Between all the lighting and shaders, we only see very small glimpses of this new world, but as more and more pictures are revealed, it’s gradually becoming clearer how everything will connect. After careful analyzation and cross-comparison, here’s what I’ve noticed:
POIs:
Notice that Pictures 1 and 8 both have visible POIs, one in front of some mountains, and the other to the side of some railroad tracks. Sure enough, this new world is intended for exploration!
Foilage:
Pictures 2, 7, and 10 feature a type of tree we haven’t seen before on MOGL: palm trees! Looks like Picture 4 might have them also, but it’s hard to tell. These trees are only found in tropical environments, so wherever they are located, it’s sure to be nice and warm!
Pictures 1, 5, 8, and 12, on the other hand, have spruce trees! That’s an interesting change. Considering that the leaves are so different, maybe they’re from a different area? A different island perhaps?
Picture 13 is interesting because it’s the first where we see oak leaves. Hmm…. maybe this is just part of one of the buildings, or maybe it suggests that there’s yet another island in the works!
It’s A Bird! It’s A Plane!
There are several references to the idea of “flight”, suggesting that this new land is remote and exotic. There’s a windsock in Picture 1. There’s a helipad in Picture 7. There’s what appears to be a bird flying above the water in Picture 3.
And then there are the bird statues. Pictures 7 and 10 both have these: In Picture 7, we see a bird statue perched atop green concrete. In Picture 10, we see a huge stone brick clock tower with bird statues on each corner and the tippy top. It’s hard to tell on what blocks they are seated. but they seem to be more opaque than the surrounding stone… it may just be green concrete as well, making Pictures 7 and 10 from different perspectives.
Note that these pictures all have palm trees, and when we look at the top of the building in Picture 2… yep, that’s the one! Pictures 2 and 10 (and maybe 7 also?) are indeed different shots of the same building. This building kind of reminds me of Springfield’s train station though, and that tunnel on the left side of Picture 10 looks like a train terminal. Could this be the new spawn?
There’s an IDEA!
In Picture 9, we see our best evidence yet of life in this new world - an IDEA store! Our favorite store is back to sell us the world-renowned Swedish Nuggs! If only they were quality…
It looks remarkably like the IDEA we all know and love, but don’t all chain stores look the same anyway? No, what captured my attention was the weird shape in the bottom right corner; looks like a tree. I don’t remember seeing that in Springfield!
The Pictures That Don’t Fit Yet…
Of course, for every picture that reveals new info is a picture that doesn’t quite make sense yet. Aside from a bird-looking thing and a *possible* glimpse at a building from another picture, Picture 3 doesn’t tell us much. Picture 11 doesn’t tell us much either besides that there’s a ferris wheel; pretty! Maybe it’s part of a carnival… and looks like Lethal already has a season pass! Where can I get mine?
The most difficult one to decipher though is Picture 6. All I can tell is that there’s a plaza with trees and a blue blob that, if you ask me, I’d say was Sonic. Maybe Peter Parker can get us a better glimpse once he uses the right prescription - I think he grabbed his dad’s readers by accident!
…
All of this has led me to believe that the new world will be MOGL’s own version of Hawaii, containing several different islands with vast geographic diversity, and at least one of which (the palm tree one) will be habitable to some extent.
What else do we know so far? Well… not much, but here are a few more theories of my own:
Tomato, Tomahto!
In Picture 13, there’s an interesting block within the leaves that I’ve never seen before… is that- a tomato? I don’t remember tomatoes being a part of Minecraft! Something’s been retextured… is it for decoration? Or will tomatoes will be a source of food in the new world? (Okay, I’ve been informed that tomatoes don’t grow on trees so maybe they’re apples or something, I don’t know!)
A New Darkzone:
It’s hard for me to believe that Springfield will be the *only* place with a darkzone, especially if Springfield is to be no more. But we’ve become so accustomed to the tower and the depths that the idea of another darkzone is impossible to comprehend… what would it look like? We don’t know yet, but Picture 5 looks rather dark and menacing…
…
I *may* be expanding this theory as we get more info… post your thoughts in the comments below. :)
